The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme of Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. It provides opportunity to the student youth of Graduate & Post Graduate at colleges and University level of India to take part in various Government led community service activities & programmes. The primary objective of developing the personality and character of the student youth through voluntary community service.
In Sahyadri science college NSS was started in the year of 1973 with the primary purpose-‘Education through Service’. NSS Unit of Sahyadri Science College Received award ofUniversity Level Best NSS Unit and programme officer Dr.Vidyashankar M HReceived award of University Level Best NSS Officer in the year 2018-19.
The primary objectives of NSS are:
- 1. Understand the community in which they live and identify its needs and problems.
- 2. Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility.
- 3. Utilize their knowledge for the welfare of society.
- 4. Gain skills in mobilizing community participation.
- 5. Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitudes.
- 6. Develop a spirit of service and compassion towards the less fortunate.
NSS activities
NSS activities are divided into two categories: regular and special camps. Regular activities include projects like literacy programs, health awareness campaigns, tree planting, blood donation camps, and cleanliness drives. Special camps are usually of one-week duration where volunteers stay in a rural or underprivileged area to work on specific projects and interact closely with the local community.
